Readme for Graph CoOrdinates

This program was written in order to allow Excel to easily find the co-ordinates of any point on an XY (Scatter) graph. Currently Excel will show the co-ordinates of a data point on a series, but if there is no data point at the location you want to find, it is not so easy. Graph Coordinate software fixes that.

Installation

  1. By downloading and unzipping ChartCoOrds.zip you have extracted 2 files:
    Readme.html (this file)
ChartCoOrds.xla (the file you will store along with other Excel add-on software (*.xla) files
  2. Store ChartCoOrds.xla where the other .xla files reside; typically "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Library" for a Win98 - MS Office environment. If in doubt, do a FIND for *.xla
  3. Store this manual somewhere where you keep these things or print it.
  4. Register the Add-in with Excel by going to the Tools, Add-ins menu in Excel. Choose Browse, then you should be able to navigate to the ChartCoOrds.xla file to select it as an add-in.

Uninstallation

  1. To unregister the add-in from Excel, go back to the Add-ins menu item and uncheck the checkbox next to the add-in name.
  2. To remove it entirely you may have to delete the toolbar from Excel manually (depending on your version of Excel). To do this right click on any toolbar and choose customize. Select the ChartCoords toolbar from the list and hit delete. After exiting Excel, you can delete the .xla file.

Useage

With this add-in loaded all you have to do is:

  1. Select the particular graph you wish to analyze by clicking on it.
  2. Press the Find CoOrds button:
  3. Move the horizontal and vertical dotted lines that will appear on the graph into position so that their intersection is the point you want to find. While you are doing this the absicca and ordinate will be displayed on a new toolbar button.
  4. Once you have them both correctly positioned, press the co-ordinate display button and the dashed lines will be removed and the absicca and ordinate label added to the graph.
  5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 for any number of points.

The number formatting will be that of the relevant axes, so if there are too many decimal places, try changing the number format of the axis.
